View Full Version : Burn Speed confusion . . . (and small typo)

I have a "generic" brand burner that is about 18 months old. It shows up as CD-RW CED 8120B LG in the burner option list. It purports to be a 12X.

I get that you are strongly suggesting that it is never a good idea to burn at a burner's rated highest speed? This is a separate issue than burner underrun errors. MY machine seems quite able to keep the buffer at 98 % or so while burning at 12X.

My discs (generic cheapies BTW) seem OK. I do a full verify and have had no errors. They read well in multiple CD-ROMs.

Why the recommendation to slow down the burn if the buffer remains nearly full? Does a slower burn somehow burn "deeper?" Will the archive discs be more dependable over time if I opt for the slowest burn speed rather than the fastest?

In short, if my discs seem OK at 12X, why should I slow down the process?

In case you have not yet noticed, the word "above" in the tool-tip text that appears when the cursor is over the "Burn" button shows up as "aboe."

Typo has been corrected in the lab...thanks for pointing it out. I am dure that there are more lurking...please keep looking ;>).

Regarding the burn speed. No...if the drive speed keeps the buffer at 98% that is fine. I was referring to high speed drives which seldom have machines that can keep up with them.

Sorry for the confusion. Can you point me to where I wrote this so I can re-word it.

Nothing wrong with the top speed as long as the PC can keep up with it.
