First, I did finally get my WB cards. Except for the lanyard (which, lets face it, is easily replaceable with a cord of your choosing) the cards are great. The ease and simplicity of carrying durable cards in your pocket or around your neck can not be overstated.

Ok, now here is my question.

Using a 1D II, C1 Pro (with etcetera profiles-v2), on a cloudy, slightly misty, day, using the lighter gray card gives me a picture which is slightly oversaturated and a little too green(using the etcetera lo sat profile didn't help). The pictures generally looked better before setting the gray balance. Was it the environment? What issues generally arise from using the WB outside?

Also, although I did it both ways, does it matter if the card is in focus. With longer lenses, it would be nice to still be able to use the cards hand held.

Perhaps the elusive manual would help?

Yes the elusive manual will help. Soon come (yes you have heard that before).

The focus does not matter. In fact slightly out of focus is better.

Regarding the color cast. i of 2 things is happening. Either the WHiBal is not in the same color of light that the subject is in. Or your settings in C1 are wrong. WhiBal in the proper light with C1 and ETC profiles should yield perfect results.

So check the light, and then check your monitor calibration, and/or your other color management settings.

Is your monitor calibrated?

Regarding the lanyard. I will be posting a BUY link so that for S/H only ($5/US, $10/int) you can get the new highquality "WhiBal" lanyard with a snap on/off device for ease of use. It is really a good one. Also the Black Point sticker will be included. Link should be available in the next days..

Michael, I'm a little confused by "check the light". I was shooting outside on an overcast day. The light was pretty diffused. I asked someone to hold the wb card as I photographed them.

So, should I be doing something in C1? I'm probably missing something obvious here, but could you tell me how I would set C1 for these conditions?

Sorry, should have included this information in the last post.

My monitor is calibrated using Monaco Optix [2? the newer one]. The color seems off on the monitor. Other settings appear OK. I use ImagePrint with epson printers, and what I see is almost always what I get.

You need to set the WhiBal image as the active image. Select the click WB eyedropper, and click on the Light gray card of the WhiBal. This picture should now be properly WB'ed. Now Kepping this images as the active image add other images taken in this light bu shift or Control clikcing on the thumbs. Then use the Apply To button in the WB tab and the WB of the WhiBal shot will be applied to all of the others. That should give you perfect WB on all the images in that light. Of course you may not like "perfect" WB, and then you can tweak the original, and then apply.

Clear?

that is exactly what I have been doing. Therefore, I can only assume that I don't like the correct white balance (in these shots, anyway).
What I will do is correct what I dont like in the exposure window (or whatever the correct name is for the window with the levels correction. My question is, should this be part of my normal work flow when using white balance.

I asked the following in the C1 forum, but since we are going there anyway, once I have adjusted both the white balance and the exposure, can I then copy these settings to other shots in the session in one step? Or, do I first copy the grey point settings, and then copy the exposure settings?

Thanks, Michael. I wonder if my problem stems from the quality of the light on a grey, slightly misty, day. Usually the WB card works better. Any thoughts?

Richard

I would have to see a picture to comment on the gray days. Send me a RAW if you like, with the WhiBal in the scene.

Regarding the appying, yes you can do it in one step. When you hit apply, a dialog comes up that lets you select which parameters you want to apply (copy) to the selected images.
