View Full Version : AC won't run on my Compaq notebook

I've installed AC on both my Compaq Evo N800c notebook and my workstation (built around an Asus MB with AMD Athlon chip). AC seems to run normally on the workstation, but unfortunately my CD burner is on my notebook. AC appears to load and function normally on the notebook (no error messages in the install, etc.), but after I select the files for processing and hit the Process button, I simply get the error message that Processing failed. It almost seems as if AC is simply not picking up the list of checked folders/files before attempting to process--so it "fails" because it doesn't find anything to process (that's purely speculation on my part). The only other difference in operation between my two installations is that when I hit Process on the notebook install, it pops up a window asking for confirmation/selection of the root folder--this does NOT happen on my workstation install.
Any suggestions or workarounds? I have purchased a registration key, but these tests are with the pre-release demo version (I assume the registration will not change the behavior).
Many thanks.

If you are running the Pre-Release "A" version this is a known bug that was fixed a while ago. It only happens in DEMO mode so in fact, if you enter the Reg Key I suspect that the problem will go away. Or you can download the fixed version, here...

Regarding the asking for a path, that is an option in the preferences. Just turn off the manual selection for the Common Root Folder.
Please let me know if this solves your issues.
Happy new year..

Many thanks for the prompt response, Michael! I'll try the new release when I get home tonight, since I was in fact using the "A" pre-release version.
Thanks,
Jerry

Did I miss the v1.0 release?

No you didn't.
The official release has so many new features that we decided to release it as V1.1 to distinguish it from the V1.0, and to not have to keep discussing if we are talking about the official V1.0 or the pre-release 1.0. Just to make life easier. Still a free upgrade from the V1.0 Pre-Release.
Happy Holidays..

Michael, I've now tried to install v1.1 on that same Compaq notebook and unfortunately can't get it to even load now. I consistently get the following error message:
Error 429
ActiveX component can't create object
Location: ArchiveCreator.frmAbout.Form_Load
Line 15
If I attempt to "Ignore," I get a series of subsequent error messages, with similar messages but different line numbers (Line 17, Line 472, etc.).
I did uninstall my previous beta version first and then installed v1.1 and then the SDK 5.0. When I tried the same procedure on my desktop machine, it all worked smoothly.
Any ideas/suggestions?
Many thanks,
Jerry

With the V1.1 installed, double-click on the file called
RegACActiveX.bat
in the AC folder.
See if that clears things up. Please advise either way.
Sorry for the inconvenience..

Michael, I hate to be a pain, but I still seem to be having difficulties. I did as you suggested and the batch did process and that did solve the previous problem, as far as I can tell. AC v1.1 loaded fine, apparently, and this time let me begin the Processing--reading in a bunch of files. In fact, it indicated that it "processed 1612 matching files," even though the several folders that I had checked off don't hold anywhere near that many files.
However, it then stopped processing, while "Estimating HTML index size," with the following message:
Error 68
Device unavailable
Location: ArchiveCreator.MiscUtils.ensureDiskSpace
Line 123
FWIW, I've got a 60GB drive on this portable with only a fraction of it being used.
Thoughts?
Many thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
You are not being a pain. My apolgies for the problems...
Well the good news is that all is up and running (almost).
The large numbers of files is because there are 4 files created for each 1 that you check if you are using thumb and viewing images. So this is proper operation. We will clean up the file nmubers so that they make more sense in a later version, but they are accurate.
The error 68 is one that we have not seen. This is chening to see that you have enough space on the drive for the temporary index. perhaps the drive is not set properly. Take a look in the preferences and see that the temporaty index folder is set to something that makes sense.
If you cannot get around this, I can email you instructions to enable a debig function which should tell us what the problem is.
Sorry that this is taking so long to get you up and running. Thanks for your patience...

Michael, your comment was enough to make me look more carefully at the Preferences and sure enough--the Temporary Index Folder was not set correctly. I had mistakenly attempted earlier to install AC over a network cable that connects my desktop to my portable at home--I realized that was dumb and uninstalled and reinstalled properly from the portable's C drive. But it left a vestige of the earlier install in some config or registration file maybe (?), which meant the Temporary Index Folder was set to a non-sensical mapped drive (from the portable's viewpoint, anyway).
Long way of saying that I seem to be up and running now. Thanks for your help.
