View Full Version : failed to backup files on DVD-RW

I downloaded the V2 today and tried backing up using DVD-RW disk on a Toshiba DVD writer. I have successfully backup files to DVD-RW using CopytoDVD. But when I tried the new AC, it failed at the step trying to erase the DVD-RW. I then tried the same disk with CopytoDVD and it would not erase the disk. Do I have a defective disk? I am afraid to ruin another DVD-RW. Also should the speed setting match the speed of the DVD-RW. It was set to 2x by the program but my writer is only capable of writing DVD-RW at 1x.

It is hard to tell.
It could be a bad disk, although I have not seen where a disk would be "ruined".
The erase before a burn is a quick erase of the table of contents. You could try the Full Erase in the Options menu. it will write to the entire disk and take a while (if it works).
Also, it may be that you might need to use the ASPI option in AC. There is a thread in the FAQs about it. Some system/drives require it. CopytoDVD may or may not use it. Some burning software does and some do not..

I tried the quick erase option from the option menu and erased the disk without error. I also enabled the two options applied to DVD burning (ASPI, ...) under preference. When I tried to burn the DVD, it would fail at the erase step with this message:
Erase Disk:
Device Error 1000
Error performing DVD-RW
Quick Format
Error Sense Data
Sense Key: 0 ASC:0 ASCQ:0

If there is a debug that I can turn on to provide you with additional diag info. Please email me the procedure. I am registered user and really would like to use AC to backup onto DVD. It seems odd that even if I erase the disk before start the write process, it would still do the erase at write. As I said earlier, I have no problem with the erase function from the menu.

One more piece of information. Just tried burning a DVD-R. It works fine. So I believe the problem is only with the erasing step. If somehow this step can be skipped when the disk is empty, the process of writing to DVD-RW will probably work.

Sorry about the problem. We have seen this now on a few system where the RW would not get past the erase step. We are working on it with our vendor.
It would be helpful if you would try to burn an RW with the Burn Logger turned on, and then send the log file to us. The procedure is described in the 2nd half of this thread..

You can send the burn log to me at ACSupport@pictureflow.com
Thanks for your help..

Can you please do the following for us...
--Confirm again that you can erase the disc from the Erase menu.
--Please send a screen shot showing the entire AC app when you get the erase errors during the write process.
--Please turn on the program logger as described in the 2nd Troubleshooting thread in the FAQs, here..
http://www.pictureflow.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=502
..and send me the log file. ACSupport@pictureflow.com
Thanks..

I tried the version that was sent to me and got exactly the same result. I also confirmed that I was able to erase the DVD-RW using the options menu. I got the message "Erase completed". When I tried to burn the disk, with the program logger running, all I got on the debug logger is this message:
Form Main-Started Logger.
I also tried the diagnostic mode, have no problem using the command to open tray, close tray and erase disk. Because the lgog exceeds the max length allowed, I emailed the log from the diag screen.
Thanks.

OK,
We know that the erase capabilities of AC work find with your drive since the erase dialog and the Diagnostic app works fine. There is something happening that is effecting the erase during the burn process.
Here is a simple test to try that will eliminate one possible issues,
1-Go back to the selection page, turn off the index
2-Select only 1 file and process
3-Try the burn and see if the erase is OK.
4-do this with aspi option on and off.

I tried with the aspi turned off. It seems that the erase disk set would complete and now failed at the step "preparing to write".
The CDburner logger also contains some more info.

Did you try this last test with ASPI on?
ats65

It was done with ASPI off.

When you get a chance, please try this with aspi off.
Thanks......

We must have cross posted or you missed sending me a program to try. I did try the burn with ASPI off.
With the ASPI option on, the program would not advance to the "prepare to write" step and the CDBurnerlogger would be empty. I got all these messages in the log only with the ASPI off. The other option (DVD compliant) did not make any difference. Let me know what else you want me to try. Thanks.

This is a real tough one, thanks for hanging in there with us.
Did you ever try to write data with the diagnostic screen, if not, please try this...
Bring up the diagnostic, erase the disk, then press the write data button. Let me know what happens

I tried to burn in diag mode. Got the same result. I can erase the disk but got the same error when I tried to write data to the disk. I also sent you the burner log yesterday. Same result with the latest beta (f) you sent me. Thanks.

Hi,
I am going to contact one of our vendors regarding your problem. I need to get some system info from you, ie maching type, speed, OS version, etc etc... an easy way to do this is to get a belarc report
Belarc Advisor:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
You can extract the info from there or just email to to us.

Just wondering if you have come any closer to finding the problem with burning DVD-RW using Toshiba drive.

ats65 and athomas2....
You both seem to have similar problems...we just uploaded beta 4 on the website. Please download and install this version.
Do the following...
1-turn off aspi support and restart the app
2-go to the prefernces dialog and you will see an option called Media Wait Time... please set this to 20 (seconds)
3-Try the burn again.
If it doesnt work, set the option to 30 or more and see what happens. If it still doesnt work, try the same with ASPI support turned on.
If it does work, you can try to dial the number down and see where it fails.
This option has modified use in this version, there is also some other changes that may effect you issues. Please let me know how you make out
