View Full Version : Rawshooters: Try Capture One Beta 4

It looks as though a miracle has appeared!.
I was one of the devoted RawShooter users when Adobe bought and then ended the program.
I have been using Lightroom, but I'm not a happy camper there.
So, lo and behold, CaptureOne sent me an invitation to try Beta 4. I own CaptureOne v 3.x and dislike the workflow a lot.
Well, Beta 4 runs like RawShooter!. I have tried the beta for about a week and am delighted with the workflow and the similarities to RawShooter.
And I doubt that Adobe will be buying CaptureOne any time soon!!

Best of luck to you working with them! I can't stand the attitude over there. Just wait you'll see.........

With that attitude I and many others wouldn't be using software from Microsoft. And, BTW, as I stated, I own C1 version 3.7, so I'm not a total stranger to CaptureOne.
I really don't need to interact with software companies that often, but I choose the software that I'm going to use carefully because I will use that every day.
Beta 4 has a lot in common with RawShooter—unlike the earlier versions which I found to be a pain.

Can their attitude be any worse than Adobe's in their Lightroom forum where every color issue is 'user error'?

I own the LE version of Capture One, this was the bundle deal with Sandisk. As far I understand, their free updates are limited to mere 2-3 times, than its payday again, and the price for Capture One seem to be extreme.
I think that they will have problems with reaching wider spectrum of users with such price. Based on experience with Pixmantec (and 3 other cases not related to photography, e.g. Sygate) I am hesitant to spend virtually any money on software, unless is $0.00. Besides, the paradox with software is that its replication is virtually cost free. Thus the sales force should seek the max. of (n*p), with 'n' number of licenses, and 'p' price. Sometimes the p*n can be maximized by dropping the price, what results in 'n' raising dramatically... Lets face it: Who aside of Phase-One digital backs owners and professionals seeking uncompromising color precision will pay $350-400 for a raw converter, considering the fuzz around Lightroom?
Lightroom is like a force of nature, it will keep the lion share of attention and despite the storm or emotions from both protagonists and haters (see Adobe forums,) they keep selling. They also keep improving and fixing, and so slowly the "assimilation process" progresses, we are all in it now, more and more proficient with it, and Lightroom v1.1 really delivers splendid results. Luminous Landscapes wrote about Capture 1 V4 beta "too late too little," I tend to agree. I am sorry, I do, and I am not Lightroom's best Friend. But once you manage to tame the LR-beast, you realize that it is difficult to live without speckle removal, lens vignetting correction and a few other heuristics. Capture One V4 beta does not provide a proper answer... And there is the Lightzone also, with its revolutionary approach.

Yes, there are many different tools available for the task we all face, and we will tend to like different ones. But as you say Lightroom will be pervasive, and that is OK.
Regarding n*p, the problem is that as p goes down, n goes up, and that cause the support costs (major cost of sales) to sky-rocket and at some point become unmanageable. Of course for a properly designed and implemented product support should be manageable under any circumstance. But pricing is a complex issue for a company. maybe Phase does not want to sell its pro product widely, and that the high p makes up for the lower n with a much smaller support issue. I do not know.

Hi,
I was trying this out and it seems pretty good, except that I couldn't figure out how to process multiple images. I had to hit INS and the right arrow through the whole set of images to get them all processed.
Am I missing something?
Thanks!

If it works like the previous versions, you can select all of the images that you want to put into the process queue, and then press INS.
BTW...Watch for the real replacement for RawShooter coming to this site soon.

If I selected one file from the browser, it would appear in the preview window. If I selected multiple files from the browser, they would all appear in the preview window (up to a certain number, before it says "and xxx more".
But I couldn't select multiple images in the preview window so that I could press INS for all the selected images. Only one image could be selected in the preview window at any time.
In the browser window, although multiple images are shown as selected, only one of them has a "bold" indication corresponding to the selected image in the preview window. Only that one image will be processed when INS is pressed.
Not sure if I'm making any sense with the above description. Also not sure if this is how the software is or if it's like this because it's a beta...
This will certainly affect my purchase decision.
Thanks for any comments!

I understand completely. I would suggest posting over at www.phaseone.com. And of course please take a look at our new Raw Converter, as well, when it is released shortly.
We feel that we surpass the image quality and color and workflow of C1, but of course you should be the judge.

Michael, thanks for pointing me to the phaseone forum. Didn't think to look there. There's a thread on this. It's a bug.
I'll certainly look out for your raw converter when it is released.
Thanks!

This thread is a wonderful x-mas present. I am so happy to hear the new Etcetera raw converter is coming soon. With the latest release debacles at DXO and Phase One, I eagerly await something "lean and mean" with good color and bug free for my 30D. I liked Capture One 4.0 as a beta. I thought it was almost there, but when they released the beta pretty much 'as is' it made me think it's time to look elsewhere..
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Thanks Evan. Yes it is true. We hope to release the ETC Raw Converter in the 1st Quarter of 2007, but of course it is not done until it is done. We do not want a premature release like some others have done.
We have not decided whether or not to do a public beta, so these details are to follow. But of course if we need internal beta testers, our forum will be the first place we announce the need.
Thanks and happy holidays...

Back to the heading. I like Capture One version 4.0 and it has some new tolls e.g. free rotation that I appreciate a lot. Seems I have some problems with getting the horisontl line quite straight in some pictures, due to age?
What I like with C1 is the simple work flow, that it has the tools I mostly use and that batch developing is fast and simple. I am not at so impressed of LR. For me there are too many features and on my machine it is too slow.

PS wonder why "the man of many colors" spells colour as color. Thought he was from Scandinavia like myself. DS

I actually spell it like farge...
I guess I have just adapted the flavor of color to honor the people and neighborhood I communicate most with...
