View Full Version : Slow processing of FSL & Photoshop

Don't know if anyone else has had this problem. I'm a new AC user, and noticed that I was getting very slow display of files in the File Tree pane - we're talking about minutes to open a folder with a couple of hundred images. During this time, CPU was maxed out. It also showed up as very slow loading of a previously generated FSL. In fact, I thought that I had the "AC won't start problem", since AC appeared to hang at the initial screen showing component version numbers. After disabling "Auto Load last FSL", AC would start quickly, but file display in the File Tree pane was still unaccepably slow.

I noticed that I had the same problem in an explorer display of the same directory. Never bothered me, since I only access image files through Thumbs+.

After some searching, I discovered the problem, and the solution. When Photoshop is installed, and you ask it to handle aa file type (say JPG), it installs it's own handler for the file type. By default, this handler generates a thumbnail for each file in a folder when accessed through Explorer (or though an application file tree pane). This is were the time is going.

To disable this feature, you need to select an image file associated with Photoshop in Explorer and bring up its property sheet. You should see a tab labelled "Photoshop Image". Uncheck 'Generate Thumbnails'. This should disable generation of thumbnails for this image type. After doing this, AC is very speedy in displaying file icons, and reloading the FSL list.

Mike,

Thanks so much for this valuable information. I was unaware of this Photoshop behavior and the ability to disable it.

Thanks again..
