View Full Version : Suggestion/Request

Maybe this is a simplistic request but I would like to find the following features in an image archiving program...
I still want the program to spread a large folder of images across multiple disks, but I would like to have the option to do a straight data copy onto CDs/DVDs without index files or source folders...just a straight data copy so that the disks ONLY include folders or directories that I create.
I would also like to program to inform me as to the range of images on each disk so I could simply write that information on the disk.
I like and use the index functions of AC, but there are times that I just want a straight data copy and I want to know what images are on what disks.
Does this make sense to anyone?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
I am not sure that I completely understand, but I will give it my best shot..
You can turn off the indexing options on the Setup Page and make your "straight copy".
Also, in the Processing page, after the files are "processed" (which in this case is to span them acorss the discs), you candrilldown in the tree to see exactly what files are on what discs.
Does this clearify things somewhat??

Michael, yes this clarifies somewhat, but when I create the CDs without the index I see the following folders:
ACSys
_CollectionFileSets
Source_F
I would just like to be able to take a folder full of images, copy them to cd/dvd, then open the disk and see nothing but a directory of the files I just copied.
Also, even if you burn without an index, a README.HTML file is created which refers to a non-existent index page.
These cryptic folder references and readme files are confusing to technologically illiterate clients.
To clarify...what I am asking is that if I have a folder of images numbered 0001.jpg to 0500.jpg I would like to be able to burn this folder to multiple disks so that when you open the disk you get a directory listing of:
0001.jpg
0002.jpg
0003.jpg
0004.jpg
etc...
Nothing else...no folders (unless I had previously created them in the original source folder), no read-mes.
Thanks,
Greg

Why not just make a straight copy of the folder containing the images to the disk using one of the available disc burning programs? EZ CD Creator, RecordNow, etc.
You can copy folders or individual files containing any kind of data to a disc that way.

Which of those will allow you to span a large folder across multiple disks? I know Easy CD Creator 6 will, but it also installs something called Roxio Restore or something like that to restore images from the disks. I'm not familiar with RecordNow.
I just want a straight data copy that will automatically span images across multiple disks.
Ideally, I'd like to get it in AC, but please understand this is not a criticism of AC, just a feature request.

You're saying you have a single folder containing 700MB of data? Why not break it into two or more?
To find out what is in any folder right-click on the folder name, go to properties, and you can see the size and the number of files contained therein.

No, I'm saying I may have image folders with 700mb, 2gigs, 4 gigs, 6 gigs, of data...whatever.
What I want is to be able to take that folder, regardless of size, and automatically archive the images across multiple disks just like AC does now...but I'd like the option of just a straight data transfer with no index files and no source folders. Just the image data files in the root directory of the disk.

BTW, Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 will do what I ask, except that it installs the Roxio Restore program, which I'm not interested in.
Also, if there is a write error in the midst of archiving to several disks, there is no mechanism to restart from the disk with the error...you have to restart from the beginning and trash all the disks you had created previously.

Greg,
I uderstand your request. We will note it for possible inclusion in a future release.

Any possible update on this request? Cause it's something that I definatly want and need. I already have a set of DVD's that I've had to manually juggle folder sizes to get them to fit optimally. So, looking for a more automated way of doing this, I've come across your AC solution. My only hesitance in purchasing it right now is the Creation of the source folder. I'd rather the folders in the folder I select to be archived to be on the root of the DVD. Since all my other DVD's are like this. The primary reason this is necessary for me is I already use a cataloging program for my previous DVD's and would need to keep the folder layout consistant.
Another nice feature would be to be able to specify at which folder level splits can and/or cannot occur. For instance say I have a folder setup like this...
Archives
|______Outdoor
|______Indoor
|______Animals
|_______Cats
|_______Dogs
In this example, I'd want lets say for the folders under Archives to be split but folders under Animals to not be split(spanned). So depending on the size of the sub-subfolder I could possibly see Cats on one disc and Dogs on another, but never Cats on two(or more) discs.

Blast, can't edit my posts... to clarify the folder layout, replace the .'s with a blank space...
Archives
......|______Outdoor
......|______Indoor
......|______Animals
....................|______Cats
....................|______Dogs

The elimination of the source_c folder is a feature we are working on. We wil still need to put our ACSys folder etc but files at the root of the archive will appear in the root of the CD/DVD as well as in the root of the HTML index.
